Little Jack Hare
Three little hares lived with Mother Hare in the forest near the village. Their home was a deep hole1 under the trees. Each day they came out to sit in the sun and play. The hares liked to chase2 each other and hop. Mother Hare said: "Stay close beside me3. You are not strong."
Little Jack Hare was not happy. He did not want to stay near the hole. "I am quite big and brave", he said. "I can go all by myself. I can go far away." Hop! Hop! He ran off until he came to a garden. "This garden is pretty", said Little Jack Hare. "I want to see all I can". Then Jack Hare saw two white rabbits. They looked at him. "Who are you?" they said. "We don't know you." Little Jack Hare said: "Look at me. My fur4 is brown, but I am a rabbit too. I can jump high. I can run quickly, I can play with you." The white rabbits played with him. Little Jack Hare was happy. He would like to play all day long.
A few hours later something big ran through the garden. It was a dog. He was very big and strong. He had big teeth. He gave a loud bark5 and ran after the rabbits. The dog saw the rabbits and thought: "Here is something to eat." The two white rabbits ran to their green house. But poor Little Jack Hare did not have a place to hide6. So he ran to find his hole but couldn'1 find ii. He ran very far from the pretty garden. He was safe, but he was lost. He couldn't find his mother. How he wanted to see his mother!
The stars looked at him, but they could not help him. He was not big and brave to live alone. He was just a little hare, lost and weak. Then something hopped near by. It was Mother Hare. "Is this my dear little son?! I am looking for you everywhere! Come home with me. You are too small to go so far from the house!" Since then Little Jack Hare has been safe and happy. He promised his mother to be good and not to run away.
